Whether you’re a writer, student, or professional, one of the last things you want to be accused of is stealing someone else’s work. Plagiarism checkers are an essential tool in any writer’s toolkit to keep you honest and to protect your reputation. But not all plagiarism detectors are built equal.
That’s why we tested Smodin’s Plagiarism Detector against top competitors. In all benchmarking, our tool easily and quickly identified copied content with greater accuracy than the competition. Keep scrolling to see the test results yourself.
Testing Methodology
If you need to keep your work free of stolen content, you need a tool that’s not only accurate but consistent. Especially if you’re a student submitting multiple papers throughout a semester, a writer or researcher with regular assignments, or even a teacher checking your students’ work.
That’s why we knew we couldn’t test each tool with just one text sample. Instead, we pulled text from three different sources across the web. Each sample was of a different length and was from a different source.
Our side-by-side tests compared Smodin to:
Grammarly
Papers Owl
ZeroGPT
*Note: GPTZero only allowed one free text scan before paying for further scans, while other tools did not. Because of this, we were only able to include results from the first test.
Test 1
For the first test, we took a text sample from a Medium article on self improvement and personal development.Source: Medium
We then directly copied and pasted this sample into each detector without modifying the text. Here’s how each plagiarism checker did:
Grammerly: Failed to detect any plagiarized content.
Papers Owl: Failed to detect any plagiarized content.
ZeroGPT: Failed to detect any plagiarized content.
Smodin: Detected 44% plagiarized content and correctly identified the source. Although this wasn’t a perfect score, it was still leaps and bounds ahead of the competition.
Test 2
For the second test, we grabbed a few paragraphs from a blog on site content creation.Source: Crocoblock
Again, we pasted the selected text into each checker tool. Here’s how each checker performed.
Grammerly: Detected 8% of the content as plagiarized, even though 100% of it was directly copied from another source. It also failed to identify the article from which the text was actually pulled.
Papers Owl: Failed to detect any plagiarized content.
Smodin: Correctly identified 98% of the content as plagiarized and cited the correct source. This was a near-perfect score.
Test 3
Last but not least, we sampled the introduction from an article on book blogs.Source: The Book Satchel
This was each detector’s last chance to show off their potential. Here are the results.
Grammerly: Failed to detect any plagiarized content.
Papers Owl: For the first time, PapersOwl correctly identified 99.3% of the text as plagiarized. This near-perfect score came the closest to Smodin’s record.
Smodin: Smodin: Smodin identified 100% of the content as plagiarized, again beating out the competition.
